After the killings of eight people in Atlanta, including six Asian women, Caroline H. Lee wrote a commentary for WBUR’s blog Cognoscenti, responding directly to news reports that said it was “unclear” whether the killings were motivated by racism. Her commentary is titled, “.”

Lee, a student at Harvard Medical School, wrote that some reports have ignored the reality that “racism and the sexual violence perpetuated against Asian women are not separate issues, but matters that are inextricably intertwined with one another.”

In an interview with Lee said the shootings were like a nightmare come true for many Asian American women.

“The fact that these small microaggressions and things we experience on a daily basis could become violent and could lead to our eventual deaths, I think that’s what was so scary about it,” she said.

This interview was featured on NEXT from the New England News Collaborative.
